Movie Review : A Walk In The Clouds

Tittle : A Walk In The Clouds
Director/ Producer : Alfonso Arau
Rating : ***1/2

A Walk in the Clouds is a 1995 American romantic drama film directed by Alfonso Arau. The screenplay by Robert Mark KamenMark Miller, and Harvey Weitzman is based on the 1942 Italian film Four Steps in the Clouds by Piero Tellini, Cesare Zavattini, and Vittorio de Benedetti.

Plot synopsis

Shortly after the surrender of Japan, marking the end of World War IIUnited States Army Sgt. Paul Sutton returns to San Francisco to reunite with his wife Betty, whom he married — following a whirlwind courtship — the day before he departed for the Pacific. The war has left him with emotional scars, and he experiences flashbacks on a regular basis.
Paul's reunion with Betty is strained, especially after he discovers most of the letters he wrote her were set aside unopened. He is determined to make a go of the marriage however, and hopes to establish a new career for himself. Betty insists he continue to sell candy door-to-door, and he sets off to Sacramento. En route, he meets fellow bus passenger Victoria Aragon, a Stanford University graduate student whose Mexican-American family owns a vineyard in the Napa Valley. When he learns the unmarried woman is pregnant by her professor, Paul offers to introduce himself to her very traditionalist family as her husband.
Victoria's father is infuriated, not only that she married a man below her social standing, but without his permission as well. Paul's initial plan to quietly slip away and continue on his journey, leaving Victoria's family to believe he abandoned her, is derailed when her grandfather Don Pedro encourages him to stay and help with the harvest. During the harvest Paul (an orphan) grows closer to the family and learns the joys that come with their tradition, roots, and way of life. Paul and Victoria try to ignore their growing attraction and feelings for each other, but with little success. However Paul's honor prompts him to attempt to salvage his marriage and return home, but when he does he discovers his wife is involved with another man. She has applied for an annulment, to which he happily agrees, and he returns to the Aragon estate to ask Victoria to marry him.
An argument with her angry, and drunk, father leads to a disastrous fire which destroys the vineyard. However Paul remembers one plant that may still have its roots intact and races off to retrieve them and bring them back to the family. The disaster (as well as Paul's bravery and dedication during the fire) has brought Victoria's father to realize his errors. So when Paul returns he accepts him, telling him that this is "his family" and "his roots". The family sets out to replant and rebuild with the help of their newest member.

Despite his limitations, Sam is well-adjusted and has a supportive group of friends with developmental disabilities, as well as a kind, agoraphobic neighbor Annie (Dianne Wiest) who takes care of Lucy when Sam cannot. Though Sam provides a loving and caring environment for precocious Lucy, she soon surpasses his mental ability. Other children tease her for having a "retard" as a father, and she becomes too embarrassed to accept that she is more intellectually advanced than Sam. In preparation for a custody case, a social worker turns up at Lucy's birthday party and takes her away, allowing Sam two supervised visits per week.
On the advice of his friends, Sam approaches a high-powered lawyer, Rita Harrison (Michelle Pfeiffer), whose brusque manner, fast-paced schedule and difficult personal life have earned her a reputation as cold and unfeeling. In an attempt to prove to others that she isn't heartless, Rita surprisingly agrees to take on Sam's case for free (pro bono). As they work together to secure Sam's parental rights, Sam unwittingly helps Rita with her family problems, including encouraging her to leave her philandering husband and repairing her fractious relationship with her son.
During the trial period, Lucy is living in a foster home with Randy Carpenter (Laura Dern), but tries to convince Sam to help her run away, and continually escapes in the middle of the night to go to Sam's apartment, whereupon he immediately returns her. At the trial, Sam breaks down after opposing counsel convinces him that he is not capable of being a father. Ultimately, the foster family who planned to adopt Lucy decide to return her to Sam, with an arrangement that Randy will help him raise her.
The final scene depicts a soccer game, refereed by Sam, in which Lucy participates as a player. In attendance are the foster family, Sam's friendship group, Annie, and a newly-single Rita with her son.

Soundtrack

The Grammy Award-nominated soundtrack consists of cover versions of songs by The BeatlesSean Penn wanted to use the original recordings, but when the producers attempted to obtain the performance rights, they learned that the owner (Michael Jackson) would charge $300,000 per song. The total cost would have been $4.5 million dollars, a record in terms of money paid for songs in a Hollywood production.
Instead, Penn commissioned artists such as The Black CrowesStereophonicsEddie VedderSheryl CrowSarah McLachlanRufus WainwrightThe WallflowersBen HarperThe Vines and Ben Folds, to cover the songs for the soundtrack. Penn's brother, Michael Penn, is also featured on a duet with his wife Aimee Mann.

Cintai Malaysia : Sleeping Budha, Standing Budha and Sitting Budha, Tumpat , Kelantan

Another nice place to Visit , Fascinating the various culture and religion in Malaysia is in the state of Kelantan.

the third person standing at site is not Buddha.

  1. Standing Buddha
BACHOK, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- A 36-metre tall "Standing Buddha" is being built at Wat Phithikyan Phutthaktham in Kampung Balai here
It costs RM2 million to build, mostly using funds donated by the public.

The construction work began in 2002 and was scheduled to be fully completed in 2009, said head priest Pharphochai Acharn Pho Chai.

Kelantan already has two huge Buddha statues -- the 30-metre tall "Sitting Buddha" in Kampung Jubakar and the 10.6-metre tall and 40.9-metre long "Sleeping Buddha" in Kampung Jambu or Kampung Berok. Both are in Tumpat district.

The Standing Buddha has a lift inside it which will enable visitors to have a clear view of the village from the top of the statue.

Five skilled workers and an engineer are involved in the construction.

The priest said the statue would attract more tourists to Kelantan as even now, people from Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand had come to see how the work was being carried out.

With the unique structure, Kampung Balai would be a major tourist spot, he added.

He said two dragon statues, each measuring 181.6 metres long, made up the perimeter wall of the temple.

Each is worth RM150,000 and was donated by former priest Archan Phrak Ajchan Porchai in 1992

Book Review : Can You Keep A Secret? - Sophie Kinsella

Title : Can You Keep A Secret?
Writer : Sophie Kinsella (http://www.sophiekinsella.co.uk)
Year of Publish : 2004
Genre : Comedy
Personal Rating : **

Review By Author:
Meet Emma Corrigan, a young woman with a huge heart, an irrepressible spirit, and a few little secrets.

(1) Secrets from Her Boyfriend:
i've always thought Connor looks a bit like Ken. As in Barbie and Ken.

(2) secrets from her mother:
i lost my virginity in the spare bedroom with Danny Nussbaum while Mum and Dad were doewnstairs watching Ben-Hur

(3) Secrets she wouldn't share with anyone in the world:
i have no idea what NATO stands for. or even what it is.

until she spills them all to a handsome stranger on a plane. at least she thought he was a stranger .... umtil Emma comes face-to-face with Jack Harper, the campany's elusive CEO, a man who knows every single humiliating detail about her...

review by me:
it's a typical type of writing by Ms Kinsella. If a person would follow her famous Shopaholic series, will feel that there were not much of a different from the series.

however, for those who loves reading as a leisure activities in your free time , would suggest you to fill in your shelf with the book.

Emma Corrigan , assistance Marketing Executive as usual a bit messy personality, with up side down life . have a little secret in life which shouldn't be shared with anybody. meet Jack Harper , the founder(the boss) where she work with.

very witty , very high imaginative story where an apprentice fell in love with the big boss and vice versa. it was like a dream comes true the multimillionaire - multi billionaire fall in love with her..again it's a fiction anyway.

the language used is a simple English, for a moderate vocabulary-an like me here, it's doesn't help much in improving / stock in my English vocab but it use an easy language where we do enjoy read it until it's ends.

recommended for those who need to put a smile in your day.

comes in two version (only the cover different, all inside inlay and wording are the same)

enjoy your reading.

The title of the film comes from the song "Love, Reign o'er Me" by The Who. The song appears on the film's soundtrack along with a cover version recorded specifically for the film by Pearl Jam. The song "The Birds Of St. Marks" by Jackson Browne was also used while Charlie drives his vehicle across the streets. The televised trailer features the song "Ashes" by UK band Embrace.
